Dear Readers,
With temperatures already soaring to record highs this summer, our July edition is hot, hot, hot! The Risky Business issue sizzles, featuring women in high-risk jobs who put their lives on the line every day for our safety and freedom – from officers in our armed forces serving in Iraq to local law enforcement – including new Austin Fire Chief Rhoda Mae Kerr in our Cover Story. These women are not only breaking down barriers in what has typically been a man’s world; they improve the ranks just by the fresh approach they bring to their non-traditional jobs as females. Rounding out the Risky Business theme, Brigadier General Joyce Stephens, the highest-ranking woman in Texas military history is our Lone Star Legend and our Worth column gives timely tips on how to protect and provide for our loved ones with life insurance.
In addition to these military and law enforcement trailblazers, we update the stories of two former cover women who continue to find their own unique paths in life, love and legacy: UT basketball coach and women’s sports legend Jody Conradt in AW Talks with … and former LBJ Library executive director, Plan II director, poet, editor, mythologist and overall brilliant mind, body and free spirit Betty Sue Flowers who, sadly for us, but fortunately for her, is leaving behind her beloved Austin to pursue a new life in New York with her new love, Bill Bradley.
We also introduce a new column: Succeed: Ask the Ace by local headhunter, author and interview coach Sandy Scardino, whose advice is welcome in this tough economic climate where many are struggling with job searches and interviewing; as well as the second installment of our Men’s Health Series on why your man may (or may not!) be hard of hearing. Also of note, tropical and low-cost adventures on the Big Island of Hawaii in Explore; ways to save water in a drought-laden summer in Green; uncovering the roots of a proud cooking heritage with Fonda San Miguel’s Alma Alcocer-Thomas in Sustenance; and the fascinating women winemakers of Oregon’s cooler Willamette Valley in Uncorked.
And last, (but certainly not least), our Pets special advertising and editorial section features stories on innovative new products to protect both pets and their owners from pesky pests this summer, created right here in Austin; to handy business listings to a local horse trainer and the hardworking volunteers for Lucky Mutts Rescue.
We hope you find the issue cool and refreshing!
With warm regards,
