Want to remodel your house? Did you make another New Year’s resolution to change your diet or start doing Pilates? This can be a great time to start new things; just don’t wait until circumstances force you to do so against your will. Isn’t it more empowering to just take charge? Don’t wait. In this month for Oscar nominations, I’m using famous films as metaphors for your experience. Though you may crave greater activity and assertion in your life; you also have a strong desire to stay conservative, practical and orderly. Try not to get too energized – you could find yourself in an argument.
Aries (March 21 - Apr. 20)
In the movie classic Dirty Harry, Clint Eastwood asks, “Do you feel lucky?” The guy he said that to wasn’t exactly experiencing a lucky streak. Do you feel lucky this month? Do you feel like you want to take a few chances? The caveat is you must watch out for a tendency to gamble when you don’t necessarily have the self-discipline to match. This is an especially passionate time and you have lots of energy for play, pleasure and partnerships, but those things may conflict with career interests. Be careful not to burn the candle at both ends.
Taurus (april 21 - may 21)
There was a movie out several years ago called Under the Tuscan Sun based on the popular memoir by Frances Mayes. In the movie, a writer living in San Francisco experienced what could be considered a major crisis at home. It sends her to a foreign country (Italy) where she buys a run-down villa and slowly, painfully and painstakingly remodels it. By doing the hard work on her new home and taking a chance on foreign soil, she finds a new, wonderful life. It isn’t, however, anything like the life she left behind, and that’s the important metaphor this month: Work on your home, be adventurous and be open to change.
Gemini (May 22 - June 20)
In the French film of the same name, Amélie persuades her flight attendant friend to take photos of her father’s garden gnome all over the world, and send them to him, convincing him to follow his dream of world travel. Entertainment Weekly, on its list of Top 25 Romantic Gestures, placed Amélie’s wild goose chase for her beloved Nino through Paris at #9. In each of these instances, it takes an outside influence to inspire travel, just like you this month. Be careful, though – on the road, operating machinery or even using scissors. Don’t be impatient or impulsive.
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
Recently, Oliver Stone committed to direct a sequel to the 1980s classic movie Wall Street. In the new movie, a conspiring hedge fund manager wrangles with a very determined, young, stock trader who is in a relationship with Gordon Gekko’s daughter. You don’t need a scorecard to know what happens to home and personal relationships when these high-rolling, high-dollar corporate guys sink their teeth into one-too-many deals. Going to the office early, staying late, socializing with the sharks that run the money games, it all seems to be under your control ... until it isn’t.
Leo (July 23 - Aug. 23)
In the new movie It’s Complicated, a divorced woman celebrates her son’s graduation with her re-married ex-husband and she is so dynamic and irresistible that they hook up. Suddenly, Jane (the divorcée) is the other woman. They fall into the easy comfort of their long partnership, and the passion and energy is real, all right. The problem is they are in a little bit of a situation because, well, they have travel, work and everyday concerns like family to consider. It’s like you this month: As things both come together and start to unravel, you realize the situation is complicated.
Virgo (Aug. 24 - Sept. 22)
I love the movie Julie and Julia, the story of Julia Child’s time in Paris (the 1950s) when she discovers French cuisine juxtaposed with the story of foodie/blogger Julie Powell in recent times in New York, who decides to attempt to cook every recipe in Child’s famous bestseller, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Both Julie and Julia face similar challenges and handle them in similar ways: They work hard on projects outside their comfort zone, forcing themselves to learn new things daily, and both women get an exceptional amount of support from their partners. Both Julie the writer and Julia the chef struggle tirelessly, and receive acclaim and recognition only after a long, hard climb. Like you. They work for the joy of working.
Libra (Sept. 23 - Oct. 22)
In The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Mr. and Mrs. Fox live a seemingly perfect home life. But it proves too much for Mr. Fox and his innate wildness gets the better of him. Soon he gives up his secure home and slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief. This endangers not only his family, but also the whole community of animals. I’m not suggesting that you are a sneaky chicken thief, but you share the same restlessness and dissatisfaction with the way you’ve been living. You want to have more fun, so you give up what has felt like home to you.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21)
Your month reminds me of the movie Slumdog Millionaire. As the game show host asks Jamal each question, his answer corresponds with a traumatic or momentous moment from Jamal’s childhood. He battles his social standing and his career to be a contestant, but the question the movie really asks is, “Why does Jamal get all the answers right?” Destiny. He just wanted to have a home, and to bring the girl from his childhood home to him. Everything he did was to that end. It’s your goal this month as well: Bring your heart’s desire home. It’s destiny.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21)
Sideways is a road trip movie about two mismatched old friends setting off through the wine country. The only time those guys see home is at the beginning of the movie and at the end, like you. It’s like home is there for you, waiting, but you can’t seem to get there. You veer off sideways, explore crazy friendships and foreign cultures, and learn a few things along the way. The traveling even colors your work, and how you feel about it. Changes implemented now will manifest in about three years, so don’t expect immediate results. Let your changes age.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 - Jan. 20)
The lives of Capricorns everywhere are transforming now, as if you’re channeling Jerry Maguire as he shocked his co-workers. It’s as if you stated a life manifesto and are plowing through what doesn’t work for you to get to what does, but you won’t really know what that is until you get to it. You almost want to completely change your relationship to larger corporations, tax institutions, insurance companies and ... sex. You’re also changing your mind, and that doesn’t happen often. Expect the changes you make in your career to take about three years to cook.
Aquarius (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19)
You’re in the process of changing the world, and that puts me in mind of the film, The Motorcycle Diaries. You see the world differently than most people, and you change with each encounter of social injustice, just like the early Che Guevara. Your reach is broader, and more international than you might think. Allow those feelings to propel you into your future. At the end of the film, after his experience at the leper colony, Guevara chooses the course that will be his life, to transcend the arbitrary boundaries of nation and race. You can make that choice for yourself as well.
Pisces (Feb. 20 - March 20)
Do you sometimes experience what feels like a moment of genius, or absorb vast amounts of information quickly, formulating new ideas or exhibit psychic abilities? The movie Phenomenon can act as a metaphor for your month. In the film, the protagonist even tried to use his new intelligence for the good of his community, much like you do now. It didn’t work for him because he went public, but you can keep your secrets secret. No one needs to know about your dreams, or that you keep a journal by your bed to write them down. Or, that they even come true sometimes.
